The combination of woods that is used at the manufacturing of this violin is as follows:
- Solid Carpathian Resonance Spruce (Latin name: Picea Abies (L) Karst) - used for the top plate of the instrument, the bass bar, the blocks, the corner-blocks, the linings, and the sound post.
- Solid Carpathian Flamed Mountain Maple (Latin name: Acer Pseudoplatanus L.) - used for the back plate of the instruments, the neck, the scroll, the peg box, the ribs, the bridge, and sometimes the accessories.
- Ebony (Latin name: Diospyros sp.) - used for the accessories: fingerboard, pegs, top nut, purfling, chinrest, tailpiece, the saddle, and the end pin.
Gliga violins are known for their quality craftsmanship and attention to detail. While most Gliga violins are copies of the Stradivari or Guarneri models (the Stradivari pattern is the most common pattern used by contemporary violin makers), we occasionally see something rare, like an Amati violin.
Design and Construction: Gliga's copy of the Amati violin is meticulously crafted to closely follow the design and construction techniques of the original Amati instruments. Its smaller, rounded body shape is reminiscent of classic Amati violins, displaying a sense of elegance and tradition. The top and back plates are carefully carved from select spruce and maple, chosen for their resonance and stability. Compared to a Strad violin, the Amati F-holes and the scroll are small and delicate, capturing the timeless beauty of an Amati violin.
Materials: Gliga has utilized premium tonewoods to make this violin, reflecting the commitment to quality that defines Gliga instruments. The carefully selected resonance spruce used for the top plate of the violin ensures a powerful resonance and tonal richness. The maple back, sides, and neck feature distinctive grain patterns that add visual interest to the instrument. The oil varnish, expertly applied, enhances the natural beauty of the wood. Gliga chose a honey tone for this violin to match beautifully with the white walnut accessories.
Tonal Characteristics: In keeping with the Amati tradition, this violin produces a sound that is warm, sweet, and clear. Its well-balanced tonal profile ensures that each note resonates with depth and richness, making it suitable for a wide range of musical styles. Whether playing delicate passages or soaring melodies, this violin offers the expressive capabilities that discerning musicians desire.
Craftsmanship: The craftsmanship evident in this violin reflects the skill and dedication of its maker. Every detail, from the meticulously carved scroll to the precisely shaped arching of the plates, demonstrates a commitment to excellence. Hand-applied touches, such as the antiquing of the varnish and the delicately shaped edges, add to the instrument's overall aesthetic appeal. In the hands of a skilled player, this violin is not just a faithful reproduction of an Amati instrument but a testament to the enduring legacy of the violin-making tradition. Violin-making is truly a fascinating art!
With this violin, Gliga successfully brings back to life the artwork of one of the earliest violin makers, Andrea Amati. This Gliga copy of an Amati violin is a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of the original Amati instruments and the contemporary makers who seek to honour their legacy. With its meticulous construction, premium materials, and rich tonal characteristics, this violin offers musicians a timeless instrument that embodies the spirit of the Amati tradition.
